I love shelter medicine :)

And I love NO LONGER BEING SCARED to do spays and neuters!

Year 1 of vet school: “Huh, I’ve seen spays and neuters a ton in private practice, they don’t look that hard.”

Year 2 of vet school: “WHY ARE YOU GIVING ME THIS SCALPEL I AM GOING TO KILL THIS ANIMAL WITH MY CRUSHING INEPTITUDE ARE YOU MAD.”

Year 3 of vet school: “I think I can I think I can I — HALP, PROFESSOR, HALP!  Okay… made it through… TWO HOURS LATER.”

Year 4 of vet school: “Eeek surgery are you sure you trust me, I mean really, don’t you want to think about this first?  I — oh. Look.  I did it. I’M SO AWESOME.”

Seriously, in 2 weeks I’ve gone from being triumphant at doing a cat spay in 1 hour with an assistant student and doctor helping me, to doing a cat spay in 20-30 minutes entirely by myself.  In the beginning of the 2 weeks I used to get nervous every morning before surgery… now I’m rather looking forward to it.  IT’S SO NICE to not be completely terrified by routine surgery anymore, and to have so much madder skills in terms of my incisions, ligations, and skin suturing!
